Enchantment

In Enchantment, a young woman looks directly out from a dark, compressed field of colour. The portrait-like focus of the face is set against a looser arrangement of hair, hands and background. The face is nearly frontal and sharply concentrated; the body turns diagonally through the lower part of the canvas, while one hand reaches forward into the viewer’s space.

The composition depends on asymmetry. The main mass of the figure is placed to the left, but the red hair and two hands carry attention across to the right. A brighter ochre-green area in the background acts as a counterweight to the pale face and foreground hand. The space remains shallow. Depth comes from overlap: the hand in front of the torso, the hair moving across the ground, and the second hand partly hidden behind the darker passages on the right.

The palette is organised through strong changes of temperature. Warm reds, browns and orange notes in the hair meet cooler greens, blues and near-black tones in the background. The face and hand use a more broken range of colour: pale blue, white, green, pink and salmon are placed in distinct planes rather than smoothed into continuous modelling. This gives the figure sculptural clarity without closing the surface.

Brushwork remains visible and varied. Long marks trace the hair; compact strokes construct the face and fingers; loose background areas and vertical drips expose the movement of paint. Enchantment is a contemporary figurative painting where gaze, gesture and colour create a poised but unstable field of attention.
