Vigil

Vigil places a reclining female figure inside a field of high grasses and white flowering stems. The composition works horizontally, following the length of the body from the head and forearms on the left towards the pale mint dress on the right. This extended line gives the painting its calm structure, while the direct gaze introduces a sharper point of contact.

The figure is visually tied to the landscape through colour and overlap. Grass, stems and flowers pass in front of the body, partly covering the arm, dress and surrounding ground. At the same time, the face, warm hair and focused eyes stand out against the darker green mass behind. The pose is still, but the gaze remains watchful, giving the title a clear formal basis.

The palette is led by greens of different temperature and visual weight, from dark forest tones to yellow-green and muted mint. The dress sits close to the meadow chromatically, while the hair brings in ochre, warm brown and soft golden passages. White flower heads repeat across the canvas as points of brightness. They help build the shallow space and create a rhythm between foreground and background.

The surface remains visible throughout. Broad marks create the forest and lower vegetation; longer strokes carry the hair; more compact, impasto-like touches shape the white flowers. The face is modelled with greater control, so the gaze becomes the focal point within a looser painterly field. Vigil fits the wider group of figurative works in which presence is held through stillness, vegetation and direct attention.
