Emergent Tide

In Emergent Tide, a mermaid appears within a compressed field of blue-green water. The figure is placed to the right, with the head lifted and the eyes closed, while the tail bends across the lower part of the canvas and rises into a large fin on the left. This wide curve gives the painting its structure and keeps the body moving through the picture plane, while the upper water holds the scene in a darker horizontal band.

Light falls from above in visible bands, entering from the water’s surface and passing over the torso, tail and surrounding space. These straight, downward strokes are set against the curved movement of hair and fin. The result is a controlled tension between stillness and flow: the pose is quiet, but the water, hair and tail carry movement around it.

Colour is central to the construction of the image. Turquoise, cyan, deep blue and dark green create the underwater field. The figure’s skin is painted within that same cool range, using pale blues, greys and cream tones. The dark red-brown hair acts as the main warm accent and draws attention towards the head and neck.

The handling changes across the surface. The torso is built through broad chromatic planes; the tail is broken into smaller touches that catch the light; the fin opens through long, flexible brushstrokes. Emergent Tide fits the artist’s wider interest in presence and suspension, giving that stillness a fluid, aquatic form.
