Identity

The face nearly fills the sheet, but the two hands prevent the portrait from settling into frontal symmetry. One crosses the mouth horizontally, while the other rises along the cheek; above them, the hat is cut by the upper edge. With almost no surrounding space, the features and gestures occupy the same compressed visual field.

Dark pigment gathers around the eyes, hat, fingers and clothing, set against exposed paper and diluted grey washes across the forehead, nose and cheeks. The eyes are sharply defined, while other areas break into stains, dry marks and interrupted contours. In the original work, line and wash repeatedly exchange roles: a wrinkle may be drawn with a narrow dark stroke, while the volume beside it is carried by an irregular patch of tone. Recognition remains clear even as the face is visibly assembled from separate marks.
