Threshold

Threshold is dominated by a low bank of storm cloud, its indigo, violet-blue and cold white mass occupying much of the sky above a distant tree line. Between the woodland and the cloud, a narrow strip of blue-violet keeps the horizon exposed, setting a thin interval of open colour against the weight above. Across the meadow, scattered white flowers diminish in scale towards the distance, carrying the foreground gradually back towards the trees.

The physical surface of the original reinforces this contrast. Broad, overlapping strokes build the clouds through abrupt tonal changes, while vertical and oblique marks run through the field in denser, more directional rhythms. Between them, the near-black woodland is compressed into a narrow tonal band, separating the patterned foreground from the much larger forms of the sky.
