Vigil

The reclining figure extends across the meadow in a long horizontal line, but the face interrupts that lateral movement. Her eyes meet the viewer directly, creating a concentrated point of contact within a composition that otherwise spreads sideways through body, dress and vegetation. White flower heads recur around and beyond her, while slender stems cross the figure at different distances.

Warm ochre-brown hair gathers around the face against the darker greens, making the head more distinct without isolating it from the meadow. The pale mint dress opens into a broader, quieter area towards the right, then is repeatedly cut by grasses and flowering stems. Overlap and closely related greens bind the body to the field, while the direct gaze remains the clearest element projecting outward from the image.
