Cold Silence

The darkest passage in this winter landscape lies at the centre, where deep blue trees open into the interior of the woodland. Frosted branches crowd the sides and upper part of the image, so depth develops through overlapping vegetation and shifts in value rather than a visible horizon. A broad band of snow across the foreground interrupts the vertical rhythm of the trunks and gives the lower edge a quieter, more open interval.

The palette stays within blue: near-white icy branches move through pale cyan and steel-blue into cobalt and deep navy. In the original painting, the nearest frost-covered growth is described with short, directional strokes and denser applications of paint, while the darker interior is handled in broader, less defined masses. Detail is greatest at the front; towards the central opening, branches merge into wider blue shapes and lose definition.
