The body rises from dark grasses through a long torso to the lifted head and ears, while the second foreleg stays close to the chest. The large dark eye follows the same upward direction, keeping attention within the relation between animal and branch.
The background is a broad lilac-pink wash rather than a described landscape. Against it, the hare is assembled from white, blue, turquoise, ochre, brown and muted rose, with the small red forms on the branch providing the sharpest colour accents.
